Nanowrimo…ready…set…

Posted by zarffyn on October 31, 2008

Tomorrow kicks off the first day of Nanowrimo: National Novel Writing Month. Each year, thousands of people participate in this all-out race against the clock to write 50,000 words in the month of November. Last year, I tried, wrote a few thousand words, and sputtered to a smoking, steaming, screeching halt.

This year, armed with weapons from my How to Think Sideways course, it’s GAME ON. I’m combining my lessons from the course with my drive to write.

Of course, I decided today that I wasn’t happy with the plot I’d figured out for the to-be-written novel, and am in the process of redesigning the whole bloody story.

Yes, apparently I like to punish myself.

I won’t be kicking off my writing at 12:01am–I have to work early in the morning, and after my shift, driving for 3 hours to visit my family. So I’ll start writing tomorrow night. But 3 hours alone in a car with incredibly boring scenery? My muse has no where to run, no where to hide. Me, my muse, and my voice recorder will be spending some quality bonding time together.

I plan to post snippets of my writing every Friday, or more often if there’s time. So check back here for some pieces of the first Demonbane book.

My NaNoWriMo Survival Kit:

Lots and lots of stress-relieving chamomile tea.

Lots and lots of stress-relieving chocolate.

A friggin’ lock for my internet browser. MUST RESIST THE TEMPTATION.

Some good writing music.

Aleve for the tendonitis just waiting to flare up.

Equal parts patience, motivation, and enthusiasm.

Ridalin for my idea-happy Muse.

Regular support from my family and friends–Please help encourage me to write.

Yeah.  So here we go.

On the Back Burner

Posted by zarffyn on October 7, 2008

I love the Sundered World. It’s been simmering in my heart, as my muse figures out how to write a single-author story. She’s working on it. In the meantime, here’s a small blurb that I wrote today. It’s first person POV from two different, main characters. There’s a few more details that aren’t in this, but if I told you, I wouldn’t have any surprises left. I don’t know if this story will go anywhere, but I do know that something in it is very, very compelling to me. Read the rest of this entry »

I Wear My Geek on the Outside

Posted by zarffyn on October 4, 2008

Yeah. I found this program that lets you turn sound files into ringtones (sends them as a picture/sound message to any supported phone), as well as various images as wallpapers.

Go ahead. Call me. Today you’ll hear the victory fanfare from FFVII (just like Loz’s phone!).  Tomorrow, you may hear Richard singing “Slaughter Your World.” Which, by the way, would match my new wallpaper of Lil’ Richard. Muahahaha. Yeah. So cool.

On a side note, I’m trying to work on my spaces between periods. Though sources conflict, one space is apparently being preferred because typing on a computer helps to automatically orient things. But, I’ve been using two spaces between periods for so long…it’s a very hard habit to break!  See, just did it again.

News…not really.

Posted by zarffyn on October 3, 2008

It’s been about a month.  Time for an update, I think.

In Writing News: Not much.  I’m still working through my “coursework,” which now involves beginning to write.  Because of work (more below), I’m not leftover with a lot of motivation or energy to write during my time off.  However, I’ve got a fairly lite weekend in front of me, so I hope to get moving.

My story has undergone some changes.  Once I get the first chapter done, I’ll post a portion here.

In General Life News: I’ve transferred to another center, which is much closer to home.  The transfer, however, involves a LOT more responsibility than I’m used to.  Now, I am enjoying it–but, it’s tiring.  Adding onto it, I’ve worked two back-to-back close/opens this week.  That’s exhausting.

Ive discovered a new webcomic: Looking for Group.  Written by the same writer/artist as Least I Could Do, I read through the archive in a night and I am thoroughly amused.  FOR PONY!

Our Exalted game has lost half it’s players, but we’re continuing on.  We started our First Age flashback last night, playing previous incarnations. Pretty cool.  And I have a meeting today at the Armoury to see about starting up a Pathfinder Society.

Renaissance Festival this weeking-I’m very much looking forward to it.  Aside from that…as little as possible.  I need to recharge.
